The AAUW-Prescott Opportunity Award

Since our main scholarships are so well-funded, the Scholarship Committee, with Board approval, is initiating a new award, the AAUW-Prescott Opportunity Award. It will be administered by AAUW-Prescott rather than through the YC Foundation and will be available for educational opportunities such as conferences, seminars, special presentations, etc. There will be a maximum of $500 per award. Application will be open to female students at Yavapai College, Prescott College, or Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Applicants must describe the opportunity, participation date (s), a letter of reference, and GPA information.

Recipients will be chosen by the Scholarship Committee chair[s] and two members of the Scholarship Committee. Following the experience funded by the Opportunity Award, recipients will be asked to give a short presentation, in person or via video, at an AAUW meeting, describing the experience and what they gained from it.

AAUW Prescott has chosen its first two winners of the Opportunity Award in May 2024. This award, of up to $500, is designed to help a student take advantage of a special event, such as a meeting, conference, symposium, etc., related to her academic work. Women students at all three Prescott colleges are eligible for the award. The winners, graduate students at Prescott College, are Ashley Merback and Rohana Swihart
++++Merback, a candidate for a Master’s Degree in Counseling, will use her award to attend Prescott College’s in-person colloquium event in August 2024, presenting a PowerPoint. She used her award money to also obtain certifications regarding eating disorders and treating ADHD in children. As a mother and student who is not here on a work VISA and therefore can’t work, she is so grateful to receive this award.
++++Swihart, a PhD. candidate in Sustainability Education will attend the International Society for Technology in Education in Denver in June 2024, presenting two papers on new directions in digital and sustainability education. This attendee was chosen to represent the city of Prescott and is one of only 100 people selected.

We hope our membership will support this award to enhance educational experiences for women students. If you wish to contribute please contact Kelli Klosterman.
